A night at the opera

It is 2 am and I am not supposed to blog, but that is when these things come to me. Inopportune times. In fact, that is usually when everything comes. Always at the wrong time. But the wrong time is nearly always right.

I went to see The Magic Flute at Opera de Montreal. It was absolutely fantastic. All the singers had something to bring to the table – all the singers were fabulous. In fact, as impressive as Aline Kutan (Queen), John Tessier (Tamino), Reinhard Hagen (Sarastro) and Karina Gauvin (Pamina) were, I was equally impressed with the ‘smaller names’ on the program, in particular one of the armed guards, a tenor, who had a somewhat rough but gorgeous timbre to his voice. Of course, my friend Rihab was fantastic as the 3rd spirit, and Lara Ciekievicz as Papagena. What an inspiring evening.

After the show, I went backstage to congratulate Rihab, and ended up meeting the Sarastro! Lovely. After that, we went to this fabulous restaurant in Outremont to have dinner – and Aline Kutan and Karina Gauvin were there! We also had a conversation with Alain Trudel, the conductor. All this to say that Opera Singers, Even Famous Ones, Are Real People Too. They are people with great experiences and people who are empowered to do what they love. The reason why it is so great to talk to these people is because they are inspired or inspiring. Maybe us young singers inspire them too when we talk to them. Maybe we remind them of the fervor for their art that they felt when they were just beginning their careers. The fervor is so rare, actually, and so special, and it brings such a unique energy to a person’s interpretation. I hope I never lose it.

I have learned that there is a difference between my physical voice, and my voice in the broader sense. I have mastered my physical voice – all the nuances, the breaking points; learned the ways my voice likes to move and blossom. There is freedom and joy in the practise of using my voice in that way on stage. But I needed something more.

Inspirée par une petite puce en plastique argentée qui se trouvait dans ma poche et qui portait l'inscription "Women in Recovery" d'un côté et la prière de la sérénité de l'autre (et par mon téléphone rempli de nouveaux numéros), j'ai découvert un désir en moi que je ne savais même pas que je voulais avant d'entrer dans cette réunion. Je voulais me retrouver.
